About Alfen Kennels: A Legacy of Passionate Breeding
Established in 1978 by Janet and Peter Burmeister, Alfen Kennels began as a breeder of Pomeranians. Their love for dogs and dedication to breeding excellence laid the foundation for what would become a thriving family kennel.
Today, Alfen Kennels is proudly owned by Janet and Peter Burmeister, along with their daughter Simone and her son Connor Clark. With a rich history and a commitment to producing exceptional dogs, our kennel now specializes in breeding Australian Shepherds, Jack Russell Terriers, and Australian Terriers.
As active members of the Australian Shepherd Club of the Cape and the Cape Terrier Club, we are deeply involved in the breed communities. Serving on both committees, we actively contribute to the betterment of the breeds we work with.
Situated at the foot of Sir Lowrys Pass, just off the Gordons Bay Road, our kennels provide a beautiful and nurturing environment for our dogs to thrive.
Our journey into the world of dog shows began in 2004 when we acquired Misty from Mariel de Bie of Ranscombe Kennels. Since then, the allure of the show ring has captivated us. In 2005, we welcomed Piper, our first Australian Shepherd, into our family, followed by Leia two years later, both from Stathaven Kennels, courtesy of Natasha Baxter.
In 2007, Fern, a remarkable Labrador Retriever of old English type, bred by Betty Howard of Tapeatom Labradors, joined our team. Fern has achieved great success in her show career, including being awarded Best SA Bred on show at the 2009 KUSA champs.
Our first Labrador litter, bred from Misty, arrived in 2009, producing a lovely puppy named Amy. In 2010, we celebrated our first Australian Shepherd litter from Piper, which included nine healthy and beautiful puppies. Three of these puppies showcased their potential in the show ring in 2011, while we took a break from traveling due to Simone's pregnancy.
In 2011, we joyfully welcomed Connor Reece Clark to the family, adding another generation of dog enthusiasts to the Alfen Kennels legacy. Connor's passion for handling dogs became evident, and he began training and showing dogs with us. His dedication and talent led him to qualify for Child Handling Nationals in 2022, where he secured an impressive third place.
In 2011, we also expanded our breed repertoire by introducing a Jack Russell Terrier from Heatherbell Kennels to our kennel.
Further enriching our breeding program, we added Zoe, an Australian Terrier bred by Dr. Sharon Aitken, to our kennel in 2022. That same year, we celebrated the arrival of our second Australian Shepherd litter, solidifying our commitment to producing healthy and outstanding puppies.
At Alfen Kennels, we take immense pride in our dedication to breeding excellence and providing a loving and nurturing environment for our dogs. We cherish the relationships we have formed with our puppy owners and the positive impact our dogs have made in various arenas.
As we continue our journey, Alfen Kennels remains steadfast in our commitment to producing exceptional dogs and ensuring their well-being.
